Stuyvesant
The entire ethos for this project came from two very mundane inputs: the first was an original wide-plank floor painted a deep hunter green that both we and the clients desperately wished to keep, and the second was the fact that the original owner of this small 19th century farmhouse nestled on the banks of the Hudson would reportedly pay the local masons he employed through the living room window of the home every Friday. Workers would line up single file to receive their wages in simple paper bags and then be on their way. The first of these informed the unifying color used throughout the ground floor space and on the exterior of the house, and the latter had us looking towards the more humble aspects of artistic movements of The Hudson River School and American Folk Art. Although we were originally tasked with designing just the kitchen, the client likes these ideas so much that we end up designing the whole project. We additionally pulled from the Barbizon School of Painting, Alexander Girard and Donald Judd to shape our designs, the last of which informed custom pine daybeds in the living room.
After 3 long years due to pandemic-related delays, the project is finally finished. Our GC texts us that the home is so warm and chill and inviting that it makes him want to kick up his feet and take a nap every time he’s in it. For us this is the highest compliment.
